The Gorizia started on March 17, 1930 at the Orlando Shipyard of Otto Group, launched on December 28, 1930, and was completed on December 23, 1931. It is the third ship of the Zara-class heavy cruiser.

  After completion, the Gorizia was incorporated into the 2nd Cruiser Squadron and transferred to the 1st Cruiser Squadron on December 31, 1934. From then on until Italy entered the war in 1940, Gorizia has been in the unit. During the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1937, the Gorizia was active in Spanish waters. In 1941, the Gorizia participated in the interception of the British Army's "Operation Meat" and "Operation Halberd" in August and September, and at the same time covered the communication lines in North Africa. In December 1941 and March 1942, they participated in the first and second battles of Sirte Bay respectively. Later, in June, he participated in the "Harpoon Operation" and "Strong Operation" to intercept the British army. Participated in the interception of "Operation Bearing" in August. On September 9, it was controlled by the Germans because of the Italian government's surrender to the Allies. On June 26, 1944, a joint special team composed of Britain and Italy infiltrated La Spezia and sank it.
