The BMD-2 is a Soviet-made tracked airborne infantry fighting vehicle designed by Arkadyi Shabalin. The first prototype of the BMD-2 was built in 1985 and was first revealed to the public in 1988. Started production in 1989. Production of the BMD-2 was undertaken by the Volgograd Tractor Plant. Because the vehicle is designed with a very light body and a small turret, it can be airdropped directly with a parachute. It weighs only 8,225 kilograms. Now it is gradually being replaced by the more advanced paratrooper tank BMD-3.
