The MAZ-537’s first prototype was built in 1958 and the series was put into production in 1960. The engine used in the new car can reach 525 hp at 2100 rpm, which was amazing at the time. Only tanks and armored vehicles were equipped with such powerful engines. The fuel system, cooling system and lubrication system had to be redesigned. The engine compartment is covered by steel plates. These changes and enhanced chassis allow the car to weigh up to 21.6 tons (up to 87 tons for trailers) to tow a 50-tonne class.

The first batch of MAZ-537 was manufactured in Minsk, and in 1964 it was transferred to the Kurgan factory to be produced together with the MAZ-535.
