Dragon continues rolling out superb Israeli armored vehicle subjects in its 1/35 scale plastic kit range, with the latest being the M60 w/ERA. After previously releasing a Magach 3 tank fitted with explosive reactive armor (ERA) (Item No. 3578), Dragon was hugely encouraged by consumer response to that subject. Now the stunning-looking M60 w/ERA is also available, featuring Blazer add-on ERA.
The arrangement of ERA modules is actually different from that on the Magach 3. Nevertheless, each ERA module fits onto the turret and hull easily and with precision. This M60 includes characteristic features such as an Urdan cupola, a thermal sleeve on the 105mm M68 main gun and machine guns mounted on the turret. Additionally, there’s a generous selection of photo-etched parts for delicate elements such as tool brackets and tow cable brackets, plus the tank uses one-piece tracks made from DS for added convenience. The 105mm main gun’s weatherproof mantlet cover is also made from DS to ensure maximum realism.
Dragon has already announced 1/35 scale kit of an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) version of the standard M3 halftrack, as well as one featuring Nord Aviation SS.11 wire-guided antitank guided missiles. A third one is now available, this time fitted with a TCM-20 antiaircraft gun. Similar to the American M16 halftrack with Maxson M45 quadmount, Israel replaced the four original .50-cal M2 machine guns with a pair of 20mm Hispano-Suiza HS.404 cannons, which proved effective in combat operations. Most of these guns came from obsolete Israeli aircraft. They were used in a couple of major conflicts, and they even soldiered on in Israeli reservist formations until the 1980s. In the vehicle’s rear fighting compartment is a brand new rendition of the TCM-20 antiaircraft weapon system, with the cannons and mount being intricately detailed. Additionally, there is a plethora of photo-etched parts for the kit to portray metal components, jerry cans rack, headlight guards and tool brackets. The halftrack looks authentic, playing well the role of a hybrid Israeli weapon system. This fascinating M3 halftrack is just bristling with devastating 20mm firepower suitable for either antiaircraft or ground duties.
1/35 Aufklarungspanzer 38(t) mit 2cm Kw.K.38 (Smart Kit)
Dragon’s 1/35 scale kit of the Aufklarungspanzer 38(t) mit 2cm Kw.K.38 has a facelift now. The original 1/35 recon vehicle Aufklarungspanzer 38(t) is still remarkably up to date, even though it was launched more than a decade ago. However, Dragon wanted to add upgraded items and make parts even more accurate. Modelers will find that the front of the upper hull has been reworked with the most accurate details available, and Magic Tracks have been added for greater ease of assembly. There are interior details inside the fighting compartment, and the kit mates Dragon’s 2cm turret masterpiece with the chassis of the Czech 38(t) in this extremely smart combination. The mesh screens of the turret top are realistically recreated in photo-etched metal too. Modelers will definitely need to scout out this revamped recce vehicle that saw service on both the Eastern and Western Fronts.
1/35 IJA Type 97 Medium Tank “Chi-Ha” Early Production
Dragon has previously released superb 1/35 scale plastic kits of Japanese armored and amphibious vehicles from WWII, including the Type 2 Ka-Mi, Type 95 Ha-Go and Type 4 Ke-Nu, but the time has finally come to unveil what was the most important tank type! It is the Type 97 Chi-Ha medium tank as used by the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA). The Type 97 was Japan’s most widely produced medium tank of WWII. Boasting a 57mm main gun and two Type 97 machine guns, this tank was intended to serve as an up-scaled version of the Type 95 for infantry support. A total of 2,123 tanks were produced from 1938-43, most of which had the low-velocity 57mm gun. The Chi-Ha was used in combat in Manchuria and China, as well as in fighting against the Allies.
The new 1/35 scale model specifically depicts an Early-Production variant of the Type 97 medium tank, possibly the most well-known Japanese tank of WWII. The kit was thoroughly researched by a Japanese design team, based on investigations and measurements of several surviving tanks. This level of research ensures that it will be undeniably the most accurate and precise Chi-Ha available on the market. The engine deck layout, toolbox, shovel, rear-plate brackets and distinctive flaps on the engine deck are all correctly depicted for an early-production tank. The kit resorts widely to slide molds so that fewer parts are needed. Naturally, this leads to a perfect balance of easy assembly and accuracy, which is what Smart Kits are all about! This Japanese tank kit allows modelers of 1/35 scale AFVs to field a tank widely used by the Japanese throughout the Asia-Pacific theater.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Six-Day War, which was fought from June 5-10 , 1967 in the Middle East. To commemorate that Third Arab-Israeli War, Dragon has been releasing an ongoing series of 1/35 scale kits featuring armored fighting vehicles that participated in the conflict.
The next one is a 1/35 Arab Jagdpazner IV L/48 tank destroyer from the Arab side. As might be expected, it is based on previously released kits from Dragon’s famous ’39-’45 series. However, This special Jagdpanzer IV is most definitely a ONE-OFF item, and customers won’t be able to obtain it ever again. To ensure modelers get hold of this special release of Arab AFVs, modelers will have to spring into action immediately!
